Dave Michael has been with Ellis Drumshop from the very beginning – not only as a teacher, but also acting as manager of the original University Ave location in St. Paul. These days, Michael sticks to lessons, and for good reason – at any given time he has as many as 50 students!
Michael has 23 years of drumming and 15 years of giving lessons under his belt. “I teach students to solve the problem rather than give them the solution,” says Michael. “Everybody has different strengths, therefore my lessons are highly individualized.”
Bouncing about the country as a youth, Michael studied under legendary drummers like Joe Pocaro, Ralph Humphrey, Sherman Ferguson, and Mark Morse. He cites Frank Butler, Roy Haines, and Harold Jones among his favorite players.
In addition to teaching, Michael can be found gigging all over the place with Southside Aces, Lili’s Burlesque Revue, Karen Vieno Paurus, and Hot Swing Combo.
